Fourth of July Weekend: Part Two

Sorry for delay on the second part two of the MEGA 4TH series. Working a 13 hour shift yesterday = no time for ANYTHING else. Yes, its a hard life...but gotta make that dough!
Lets get right back into it...
After hiking for a few miles, we reached the top where there was a lake and a clearing to have a picnic and fish.

I even tried my hand at fishing. I was DETERMINED to catch one and wanted to hog the pole the entire time until I did...but other people wanted a chance too (imagine that!)

All the kiddos set up a blanket and had a picnic while we fished

I caught the boyfriend hugging a tree on the way down...I like all this nature stuff is starting to get to him! :)
And I will end the second part of the mega fourth series with the cutest picture from the picnic ever...you know, so you can have your morning dose of cuteness for the day!
BAM!!

The boyfriend and his niece...pretty damn cute, huh?!
Stay tuned tomorrow for part three of the MEGA 4TH SERIES: THE RACE!!!
Now I am off to work a 10 hour shift. I guess I'll cry all the way to the bank!
Have you ever been fishing? caught anything good?
Anyone do any races on the fourth?

Fourth of July Weekend: Part One

Thats right, this weekend was so JAM PACKED with activity that I have to split it up into several parts. Well, that and to add a little level of suspense to the blog! And just to keep you interested...there was hiking, picnicking, racing, and cute family pics.
SO lets get started...
Saturday night I got off from work, ran home and packed and we hit the road! Right when we got into we met up with some friends for the night.

I'm really good at taking centered pictures....NOT.
After a bit we were wiped out, so we called it a night and went home. The next morning the whole family woke up early to go hiking.

Happy Fourth of July Weekend

Alpine Pond Gunnison National Forest Colorado

This is where I will be headed tonight after work for the Fourth of July weekend. Its the boyfriend's hometown of Gunnison, CO. We are going to visit his family there for the holiday weekend. Which I'm pretty excited about...mainly because he looks THIS cute as an uncle:

He would kill me if he knew I put this picture up!

GEAR:

I got some new running gear yesterday that I thought was worth sharing, in case anyone is interested in buying new things! First I got a pair of shorts from Forever21 that were marked down to $5 and are awesome!

Forever21

I wore them on a run yesterday and they actually did pretty well, considering the fact that they were only 5 dollars. They move pretty well and don't ride up. PLUS they are short, so they beat the heat :)

Also, I had won a gift card to RoadID at a race back in Tennessee and had been so busy that I forgot to use it! Well, the other day I was unpacking some boxes and found it. So, I decided that the time was now, and I ordered my RoadID bracelet.

I think that wearing something like this when you are running or biking is really important, because you never know what could happen. Most of the time I don't even carry a phone with me on my runs, so if something were to happen, someone could find my emergency contacts just by looking at my bracelet.

I opted for the "Wrist ID Sport", but it also comes in elite and slim....and in a variety of colors! They even have some other cool gear like belts, laces, and apparel. Go to their site NOW and give it a look! AND if you are the first person to comment me about the bracelet, I will give you a code to use for $1 off on their website.

RUNNING:

After yesterday's fun run with the Irish drinking crew, I got right back into training mode! Right after work I came home, changed into my new running shorts, and hit the trail outside of my apartment.

I did a 6.5 mile run, out and back. It was right after an 8 hour work day, so I wasn't really feeling like running when I got home. But I didn't even let myself have time to THINK about backing out. And as soon as I got about a mile into the run I felt great. Running always gives me that little boost of energy and makes me feel so great when I get done. It may be tough to start out, but I NEVER regret a run when its finished!

Now I am off to pack and get ready for work. We are leaving for Gunnison as soon as I get home!

Hope everyone has a great fourth of July weekend! Oh yeah, and check out these awesome giveaways from some awesome girls!

Do you wear an ID bracelet when you run?

What does everyone have planned for the 4th?

New Running Group

Being new to the Denver area, so far I have been left asking you guys about running trails, asking random people on the street about where to run, and basically trail and error for myself. Its been pretty easy though, because everyone here seems to be into some form of active sports.

I was SUPER pumped yesterday morning when a girl that I had met here called me to invite me to her running group!

Its called the Irish Snug and is actually a bar that has a weekly run group on Thursday nights.

Its a cute little place just about 2 miles from my apartment, so its perfect! And if you run 10 runs with them you get a t-shirt that you can wear if you go to the bar and you get free beer! Hey, can't beat that!

I had to really take a look back at my last post for inspiration on my run yesterday. I was really tired from working all day and I was supposed to get in a 6 mile run for training. Honestly, I just wanted to go home, get the run over with and then crash.

But I know that sometimes plans change, and in order to really get the most out of life, you have to go with the flow. The group only does a 3 mile run, so I ended up getting in 3 miles of my run at a leisurely pace, because we were all talking the whole time.

In the end, I didn't get to follow through with my training plan, but I got to join a fun group of runners, run on a new trail, and make some new friends! I think that pretty much means I win :)

I can't wait to get a t-shirt!!

Do you have trouble straying away from your set plans? Or do you just go with the flow all the time?

Speaking of plans, what is everyone doing for the weekend/the FOURTH OF JULY?

Running Through the Funk

Have you ever set out for a long run and about 2 or 3 miles in you think "there is NO WAY I'm going to get through this"? or how about just waking up to the alarm at 7AM to start your run and thinking "I'm too tired to run, I think I'm going to sleep for another hour instead"?
That is the way that most of my long runs for my training have been so far. Either its the altitude change or just something purely mental. Today I set out for my long determined to change the way that I have felt about them so far.
I researched some tips online and figured out that I may be starting out too fast and burning myself out before I could finish the run. I was being really hard on myself and pushing myself too much, because my comfortable pace is a bit slower here than it was at sea level. Because of this I was pushing myself too hard and beating myself up for not being able to run at the same speed. But today was different.
Like I said, I was determined to have a good run today. Afterall, I run because I love it and it makes me feel good. I needed to get back to the roots of why I started running in the first place.
I started out this morning at 8AM ready for a 10 mile run. I kept track of my pace and decided to keep it at a moderate pace for the first half of the run so that I didn't burn myself out too quickly. And it worked! I kept at a slow and steady pace of about 9 minute miles for the first 5 mile stretch of the run. By the time it was time to turn around and come back for the last stretch, I felt great!! I decided for the last few miles I would just let myself go at whatever pace I felt comfortable with, and at one point I looked down at my watch and was running a 6:58 pace! What the heck?! I guess starting out slow really does work!
I even felt good enough to go one more extra mile and  was able to finish with a strong sprint for the last quarter mile. Todays run really gave that confidence boost that I needed. It felt great to get that long run in this week and not feel like I had just gotten hit by a bus! That being said, I was reading an article in Runner's magazine today that talked about mental tricks to use to get you through those mental blocks when running, and some of them really helped me. Here are some highlights:
  1. While your running pick a spot in the distance and pick up your pace until you get there - I did this ALOT during this run and it really helped. The last quarter mile that I sprinted, I focused on an underpass the whole time and it really got me through it.
  2. Pick a new route - this really helped me a lot today too. I found a new way to go on the trail that I had been running on that was a lot nicer and shaded. Plus taking in the new scenery really made me want to go further to see what was next!
  3. Focus on positive things, not negative - this is something that I really struggle with. I will look down at my watch and think "what? 10 minute pace? you slow poke!" and then I will push myself too hard and burn out. Today I focused on comfortably running and not looking at my watch so much and I finished the run feeling proud, not down on myself.
Another tip that I thought worked great was timing my music with my pace. I usually listen to really upbeat music, and that makes me run faster. A lot of times I have trouble starting out slow because I just run. Today, I tried starting out with slower music and then getting up to faster beat music. This really helped me start slow and taper up to a faster pace, which ultimately helped me finish my run strong and with negative splits.
What do you do to get through the "running funk?"
Do you believe that running is more mental than it is physical?

Monday Excitement

First and foremost, go check out my feature on Skinny Runner. Talk about excitement on a Monday morning!

Also, thanks for eveyone's suggestions on foam rollers. It definitely helped and I am going to be shopping for one today!

So since I crammed in all of my runs PLUS a long run into five days in a row last week, I decided to take Saturday and Sunday off to give the ol legs a rest. Although, I'm not sure how much a rest they got, since I bought ANOTHER pair of heels to wear to work all weekend. Hey, how can you possibly say no to these...

Shoes from Ninewest

After a weekend of rest on the legs, I wasready to get some running in this morning. I woke you to the boyfriend's alarm at 745 and was out the door runnin...literally! :)

I did an easy 4 miles at about an 8:30 pace. Its weird because everyone talked about the altitude being different and effecting my running when I moved. But when I run I can't really tell much of a difference (as far as being short of breath, tiring faster, etc.) but I am a little bit slower here! My races have been off by almost a whole minute! And usually at home, I can run about a 7:45 pace. Maybe its just me though.

Speaking of races, I did one here a couple of weeks ago called Jodi's Race for Awareness. It was really fun and because I always take really horrible and hilarious race photos, I thought I might share a few :)

Concentrating hard on that finish line!

Im embarrassed to even show this one...I mean, I didn't even know I was capable of making a face like that! Way to go race photographer for capturing me at my finest :)

I also managed to get my first race injury...and not from running the race, but from jogging back to my car like a complete idiot. See?

047

It was actually a pretty rough trip on some gravel and would not stop bleeding! So, I couldnt make it back to the awards ceremony because I was bleeding all over the place! When I got home I checked the results and I ended up finishing in 24:16 and got 3rd place in my age group and 8th female overall. They were also nice enough to mail me this:

IMG_2273

I love it when the race directors are nice enough to send awards if you didn't make it to the awards ceremony. There have been so many races that I have not received my award from!

So now that my run is finished for the day, my breakfast has been consumed, and my blog is updated, I am ready to start the day! Today is my day off from work, so it looks like I will be doing some housewife duties like grocery shopping, laundry, and cleaning! Better get to it.

Hope everyone has a great Monday!

Have you ever gotten a bad injury from a race?

Do you usually take GREAT race photos, or do most of yours come out looking like mine?!

My legs are cursing the day I decided to take a job that requires me to be on my feet in heels all day AND start marathon training all at the same time.
They need some love. I tried to get the boyfriend to give me a leg massage last night, but that wasn't happening. That being said, I need some tips on foam rollers and compression socks. Im in the market, so give me your suggestions, likes, dislikes, etc. It would be MUCH appreciated :)
For now I think an ice bath and some stretching will have to do. I have another 9 hour work day to get through today! I'm thinking smaller heels this time.
How do you prevent soreness from running?
What is everyone doing this weekend?
